Departure on an international flight from Washington D.C. to Istanbul.


May 21, 2007

Arrival in Istanbul where you are met by your CSA Turkish On-site Coordinator. Transfer to your hotel. Later a local guide conducts a walking tour of the historic heart of this amazing city. Sights include the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, the Snake Pillar and the Spice Market. Tonight celebrate the start of your program with a Welcome Dinner.

Continue your exploration of Istanbul with a local guide. Highlights today include Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and the Grand Bazaar. In the afternoon enjoy a cruise on the Bosphorus.

A morning visit to the EU Office in Istanbul (subject to availability) will allow for a discussion on the politics involved in Turkey’s bid for membership. After a visit to the American Chamber of Commerce you have a free day to continue your exploration of Istanbul. This evening you have a special Turkish Dinner complete with local belly dancers.

This morning depart Istanbul; a stop at the site of Gallipoli allows for a discussion of WWI and the involvement of the Australians, British and Turks. Later take a ferry to the Asian side of Turkey and visit the ruins of the legendary city of Troy, discovered by Heinrich Schliemann in the 19th century. Continue on to Bergama.

Today visit the archaeological site of Pergamon, one of Turkey’s greatest classical sites. You will see the Acropolis, the Red Church and the Pergamon Museum. Also visit the Asclepion, one of the ancient world’s oldest and most important medical centers. In the afternoon drive to Selcuk and visit the ruins of Claros and the Archaeological Museum at Izmir.

Transfer from your hotel to the port city of Marmaris. Ferry journey to the Greek Island of Rhodes. Upon arrival you are met by your Cultural Studies Abroad On-site Coordinator who will remain with you for the duration of the program. Transfer to your hotel. You will want to start exploring this fascinating island, once home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Colossus of Rhodes.

Today a half-day excursion will discover the Acropolis of Lindos and the Mater Palace. Entrances are included to the Acropolis, the Palace and Museum.

 

June 1, 2007

Transfer to the airport for a short flight to Heraklion, on the island of Crete. Once the center of the splendid Minoan civilization, Crete boasts a long and fascinating history. Hotel: Hotel Astoria or similar

 

June 2, 2007

A full day exploring the wonders of Crete will include the Ex Aghios Nikos and the site at Knossos, once the center of the Minoan culture. A stop will be made at Matala for swimming.

Today discover the Museum of Heraklion, Ex Elounda, Agios Nikos and Spinalonga where you enjoy a cruise.

June 5, 2007

Today board a ferry for the beautiful island of Santorini. Discover the small twisted streets with their very picturesque whitewashed houses.

This morning journey back in time during a visit to ancient Thira. Once an outpost of the Minoan world, Thira was destroyed during a violent volcanic eruption about 3,500 years ago, and perhaps the Minoan civilization along with it.

A ferry ride this morning brings you to Piraeus, Athens busy port. Transfer to Athens, once the center of art, culture and democracy in the ancient world.

Classical Athens comes alive during a morning tour of the Acropolis including the famed Parthenon. After a free afternoon you have a panoramic tour of Athens by Night followed by a special Greek Dinner and Folklore Show.

After a free morning in Palermo transfer to the pier and board an overnight ferry with sleeping berths to Naples.

This morning visit one of the ancient world’s most famous and stunning sites- Pompeii. Buried by Vesuvius’s violent eruption, Pompeii was both destroyed and remarkably preserved by the volcano’s ash and lava. Later continue to the Eternal City, Rome. In the evening enjoy a guided tour of Rome By Night.

Morning transfer to the train station. You have reserved seats on a train to Florence. Known as the Cradle of the Renaissance, Florence is a living textbook of Italian art and architecture. A local guide will conduct a walking tour of the city’s historic center. Entrances to the Cathedral, or Duomo, are included. Return to Rome by train in the afternoon.

This morning’s specialized visit (availability permitting) is to a local Government office. Later a local guide conducts a tour of Rome including entrances to the Vatican Museum which includes Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, and St. Peters Basilica.

 

June 26, 2007

Continue discovering the riches of Rome with a full day tour including entrances to the Villa Borghese and the catacombs, just off the Appian Way, outside the city walls.

 

 

June 27, 2007

Full free day in Rome. This evening toast the success of your program at a farewell Dinner.

Spring Break in France

Spring 2008

Day One

Departure on a regularly scheduled flight from Washington D.C.

 

Day Two

Arrival in Paris where the group is met by your European Institute On-site Coordinator. Transfer to your hotel and begin exploring this beautiful city. This evening celebrate the beginning of your program with a special Welcome Dinner.

 

Day Three

This morning a local guide conducts a panoramic tour of the City of Light; highlights include Notre Dame Cathedral, the historic, spiritual and geographic center of Paris, the Arch de Triomphe, and the magnificent Invalides. In the afternoon a visit to one of the world’s greatest collections of art, the Louvre, is included. Later enjoy an evening visit to the Eiffel Tower.

 

Day Four

Louis XIV’s magnificent palace at Versailles is this morning’s focus. See the royal chambers splendidly restored to their original glory, as well as the famed gardens including Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet. In the afternoon continue to Chartres Cathedral, an encyclopedia of Medieval thought encapsulated in stone. If available the celebrated Malcolm Miller will conduct a comprehensive tour of the cathedral. Return to Paris in the evening and enjoy Paris from a different perspective aboard a Seine cruise.

 

Day Five

Today you have a free day to continue your exploration of this great city.

 

Day Six

A morning drive brings you to the providence of Normandy where you will learn about a Tale of Two Invasions. From the shores of Normandy in 1066 William the Conqueror launched the last successful invasion of Britain; nearly 900 years later the allied forces landed in Normandy en-route to liberating France from the Nazi occupation. Visit the D-Day Museum at Arromanches and the American Cemetery. Tonight will be spent in the walled city of St-Malo.

 

Day Seven

Together with Chartres, Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the most important medieval monuments in France. At once an island, Abbey, fortress and town, the Mont is a fascinating and unique testament to France’s medieval past. Later continue to the Garden of France, the Loire Valley, and the lively Student City of Tours.

 

Day Eight

The Loire Valley was the Playground of Kings who left this region literally littered with castles and palaces. Today concentrate on the development of French architecture as the medieval fortresses give way to renaissance pleasure palaces, through visits to Amboise, Chenonceau and Azay-le-Rideau.

 

Day Nine

Journey to Paris where you board a TGV for Geneva. With a spectacular natural location on Lake Geneva, this city is one of the most beautiful in Switzerland. Begin your exploration of Geneva in the city’s compact Old Town.

 

Day Ten

This morning’s drive along the Lake brings you to the Castle of Chillon, immortalized by Lord Byron. The castle dates from the 11th century and is remarkably well preserved. Return to Geneva where you have a special Farewell Dinner.

 

Day Eleven

Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the USA.

Travel Writing, Theater and Puppetry in Guanajuato

August 8 – 23, 2007

 

 

This program invites participants to understand Mexico by getting to know it through travel writing, and the study and performance of theater. Students will have opportunities to reflect on differences and similarities between public space and theatre in Mexico and what they are used to the U.S. A Service Learning component of the program allows for students to perform for Mexican audiences in schools, orphanages and other venues.

 

August 8, 2007

Departure on an international flight to Mexico. Arrival in Leon and transfer to the beautiful colonial city of Guanajuato. This evening enjoy a special Welcome Dinner.

 

August 9, 2007

Today a local guide will conduct a walking tour of this city’s historic center, including the Alhondiga de Granaditas Regional Museum, the bizarre and macabre Museo de las Momias and the Olga Costa-Jose Chavez Morado Art Museum.

 

August 10 – August 17, 2007

Classroom time in the morning allows for instruction on Travel Writing, Theater and Puppetry. In the afternoon workshops will involve interaction with the community partners, largely children between the ages of 8 and 18. On select evenings performances will be scheduled in various venues in Guanajuato.

 

August 18, 2007

This morning depart Guanajuato for the ancient city of Morelia where we visit the government-run Folk Art Market and the Casa de las Artesanias. Later continue on to the lovely highland town of Patzcuaro, well known for its elaborate Day of the Dead festivities. Overnight in Patzcuaro.

 

August 19, 2007

Today experience a hiking excursion to the Pre-Hispanic ruins near the charming town of Tzintzuntzan. Meaning Place of Hummingbirds, Tzintzuntzan was the capital of the Tarascan League at the time of the Aztec and Spanish invasions. The town is beautifully situated near the northeast shore of the Lago de Patzcuaro. Return to Patzcuaro.

 

August 20, 2007

An excursion to Teotihuacan will highlight the splendid culture of Pre-Hispanic Mexico. Site of the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, Teotihuacan was ancient Mexico’s largest city; and at its apex in the 6th century it was the sixth largest city in the world. A local archaeologist will give a comprehensive lectured-visit of this sprawling archaeological site. Return to Patzcuaro.

 

 

August 21, 2007

Today is free to relax and enjoy the final day in Mexico. This evening enjoy a special Farewell Dinner.

 

August 22, 2007

Transfer to Mexico City airport for your return flight to the USA

This morning begin your exploration of the Eternal City. A local guide will conduct a panoramic city tour highlighting the city’s most important sites including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, once the center of the ancient world’s greatest Empire, and the Vatican. In the afternoon you have a Survival Italian course.

 

May 24, 2007

Today take public transportation to the EUR, an ambitious architectural project conceived by Mussolini and the leading proponents of Fascist architecture. Built to host the World’s Fair of 1942, EUR was home to the Olympics of 1960. Return to Rome by public transportation. Afternoon Survival Italian course.

 

May 25, 2007

This morning a specialized visit to a local sports facility is included. The afternoon is free to continue your exploration of this great city.

 

May 26, 2007

A morning drive brings you to the ancient hill town of Tuscania. Tuscania is a medieval moment frozen in time. Representatives from the Lorenzo de Medici Institute will welcome the group and give a presentation on the philosophy of the school and their partnership with the town of Tuscania and its citizens.

 

May 27, 2007

This morning a local will conduct a walking tour of Tuscania and its Etruscan and Medieval heritage. Later experience a visit to a local sports team and participate in a discussion with the players and administration.

 

May 28, 2007

Today continue on to the province of Tuscany and the city of Florence, the Cradle of the Renaissance.

 

May 29, 2007

This morning a local art-historian will conduct a walking tour of Florence, highlighting the city’s incredible artistic heritage. The afternoon is free to continue your exploration of this beautiful city.

 

May 30, 2007

Begin today with a specialized visit relevant to Sport Management.

 

May 31, 2007

Leave Tuscany today for the northern province of Piedmont and the cosmopolitan city of Torino.

 

June 1, 2007

Today discover Torino including the Olympic Village. In the afternoon you have free time to visit the amazing Cathedral which houses the controversial Shroud of Turin.

 

June 2, 2007

Transfer to the economic powerhouse of Italy, the capital of the province of Lombardy, Milano. Once one of the capitals of the Roman Empire, Milano offers an intoxicating blend of history and contemporary flair. The banking and fashion capital of Italy, Milano is one of Italy’s most exciting and energetic cities.
